Edit 3/26/2018: By popular demand, I've added an optional lid for the lampshade. Initially, my build used an incandescent lamp and I didn't include it because I was concerned that the plastic would melt from the heat of the lamp with a lid on the shade. However, several people have mentioned that LED lighting makes it safe to use a lid, so I agree, but use it at your own risk. Please don't use it with an incandescent bulb - you've been warned! Mario themed desk lamp: This project is based on similar lamps I've seen online, some made from cast iron or ABS plumbing pipes. Mine is completely 3D printed. I used a free Mario model called Mario (2) Trophy from models-resources.com/download/3794. It was submitted by thegameexplorer and originated from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I had to work on the .obj file before using it, as it was open mesh. I wanted to modify it to add a bead chain hanger, and also scale it up significantly because it was very small. I initially considered using the Mario question block lampshade by leethegeek - thing 954281, but it was too large and scaling it made the sides too thin. I had to recreate it from scratch. I wanted to give credit for my inspiration. I also used Piranha pencil topper by BrandonW6 - thing 39443. All I added was a stem for it. Lastly, I used rtideas' thing 744570 strain relief (slightly scaled up to fit my power cord) to attach the cord to the desk. The rest of the design is mine. Print Settings: Printer: FlashForge Creator pro Rafts: Doesn't Matter Supports: Yes Resolution: .2mm Infill: 20% Notes: I printed this with ABS: temp 235, bed temp at 100 for the first layer, and 95 for the rest. I turned on the cooling fan after the first layer. Custom Section: Instructions: There are two versions of the pipe elbows - whole or split in half. If you print the whole ones, you'll need two; if you print the halves, you'll need four. You will need eight couplings and three medium pipes. Print one of each of the other parts. There's an extra pipe (pipe_long) that I was going to use but ended up using a medium instead. It's left in the upload just in case someone wants a taller lamp. There are two piranha plant stems - straight and curved. Take your pick! Edit 7/16/2016: You need to print two each of the pipe_short and pipe_warp files, as well as two elbows. There are two versions of Mario - one with supports and one without. The one with supports was oriented by meshmixer for optimal printing with generated supports. I included one without supports in case someone has a better way to print it. There are also two PDF files - one showing the finished lamp and one with a cutaway picture explaining how to wire it (for those who need help). I left an 8mm hole in one end of the wall for an electrical cord. I didn't put holes in the pipes because I don't know what configuration you might use. There's also a hole in the deck of the wall for an m3 screw and nut to attach a strain relief wire clamp to. I used thing 744570, but you could also use a zip tie and zip tie holder from Thingiverse. The lamp socket is similar to this one from Amazon - Satco 90-1556. The pull-chain single pole switch is like this one from Amazon - Gardner Bender GSW-32 Nickel Plated Pull Chain Switches. The socket is for a candelabra-based bulb due to the size of the lampshade. I recommend using a low-wattage lamp or LED lamp to avoid possibly melting the plastic shade. When assembling the lamp, don't glue the two pipe plugs. If you ever need to replace the socket or switch, you'll need to remove the plug(s) to access them. The fit is tight enough to hold them in position without glue.
