This is a Marinors Quadrant, an angular measurement device capable of detecting angles up to 90 degrees. Various versions of this tool allow users to calculate longitude, latitude, and time of day readings. Ptolemy first proposed the Quadrant as a superior astrolabe alternative. Medieval Muslim astronomers later developed several distinct variations of the instrument. Historical records indicate that the Quadrant has been in use since approximately 150 CE.
