Marine Instrument Cover

Marine Instrument Cover

Boats, particularly yachts have lots of instruments in the cockpit and each of them has a cover to help prevent the sun from crazing the instrument display. These sometimes get lost or broken, they can blow away in a gale or just go missing. If it is a relatively new instrument one can order a new cover. If it is older, covers can be very difficult to replace. To get around this problem with two instruments I created a general-purpose design using Open-SCAD. It works with any square/rectangular instrument with rounded corners and curved sides and top/bottom. To specify a cover, one opens the OpenSCAD script and fills in the rectangular size i.e. length and width at the corners. The length and width at the centre of the sides and between the top and bottom specifies the curvature of each. The radius of the corners may also be inserted. The thickness of the cover (1.6 mm is typical but it can be more or less). Finally, the height of the cover is given. This defines how much overlap the cover makes when it is placed on the instrument.
