The St. Mary's Church was founded around 1028 by Stephen I of Hungary, the first Christian king of Hungary. Stephen I likely established a wooden structure that would serve as the initial place of worship. Unfortunately, the church suffered a devastating blow in 1042 when Emperor Henry III launched a campaign against the Hungarians and destroyed it. Following this destruction, the emperor made the effort to rebuild the church, which was consecrated to St. Mary and the martyrs Mauritius and Laurentius, and eventually became imperial property. Today's St. Mary's Church consists of three distinct sections. A Romanesque nave with three aisles is said to have been constructed in 1213 by brothers Alban and Johann Dörr. The west tower was built in the mid-14th century in an early Gothic style, adding a touch of elegance to the overall design. To the west lies a single-aisled, highly ornate Gothic extension that dates back to the end of the 14th century. Coats of arms belonging to the Dörr family adorn both the tower and the choir. The St. Mary's Church has been damaged on multiple occasions over time. In 1529, it was destroyed by the Turks during a military campaign, which significantly impacted the church. Approximately 40 years later, in 1570, a lightning strike severely damaged the structure. Then, in 1774, a fire broke out due to a forgotten candle, causing additional damage to the already fragile building.
