Marie Antoinette with the infant Dauphin
myminifactory
This figurative grouping by Augustin Pajou depicts Marie Antoinette as Venus emerging triumphantly from the waves atop three dolphins, offering a child to France. The figure cradled in Antoinette's arms represents the infant Dauphin of France. The title given to the heir apparent to the French throne from 1350 to 1791 and again from 1824 to 1830 was strictly the Dauphin of Viennois, known simply as the Dauphin de Viennois. The word "Dauphin" is French for dolphin, referencing the depiction of the animal on their coat of arms. A more refined version of this sculpture will be uploaded soon.
