Maria Olaru was born on June 4, 1982. This Romanian artistic gymnast is a retired Olympic champion with multiple gold medals in team competitions, including the Olympics, Worlds, and Europeans. As an individual, she won the all-around world championship in 1999 and took silver at the 2000 Olympics. Olaru excelled on the vault, earning medals at international competitions. Standing at 160 cm (5 ft 3 in), she was one of the tallest gymnasts competing in the late 1990s. After retiring from the sport, she became an assistant professor at West University's Faculty of Sports and Physical Education in Timișoara. Outside The School of Gymnastics in Deva, Romania, a series of bronze busts is displayed. Each bust honors a female athlete who represented Romania since the 1978 Montreal Olympics. This tribute celebrates the strength and success of female artistic gymnasts worldwide. The school was founded by Nadia Comaneci and is now coached by Marta and Bela Karoly as The Cetate Deva National Sports college, focusing on women's athletics.
