This impressive stone carving by Karel Aubroeck stands proudly outside the AZ Nikolaas, depicting Mary Mediatrix in a striking manner. The title of this sculpture honors the former name of the Catholic Mary Mediatrix Hospital, which is now part of AZ Nikolaas. Created by artist Karel Aubroeck in 1932, this work showcases his expressionist style, born from his experience as a front-line soldier during the Great War (1914-1918). As an artist, Aubroeck was both sensitive and passionate, combining these qualities to create a unique artistic voice. In Catholic faith, the title Mediaxtrix refers to Mary's role as mediator in the salvific redemption by Jesus, bestowing graces through her. The ancient title of Mediatrix has been used by numerous saints since at least the 5th century, representing the belief that all blessings and graces come through her from her son. Aubroeck's sculpture embodies this concept, depicting Mary as a strong woman with an air of presence, despite her worn eyes. Her dignified posture and elegant folds in her dress grant her a classical goddess-like status. In contrast, the child on her shoulder is depicted as triumphant, muscular, and powerful. Karel Aubroeck was one of the most influential Flemish sculptors of the 20th century. He trained at the Academy of Temse before honing his skills as a woodcarver in Mechelen. His work primarily fell within an expressionistic style, characterized by its distinctive closed composition. This sculpture is part of "Scan The World," a non-profit initiative introduced by MyMiniFactory.
