The Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen modeled Princess Maria Barjatinskaja, a Russian noblewoman born in 1793 and passing away in 1858, when she visited Rome in 1818 accompanied by her husband. This iconic marble sculpture was meticulously crafted between 1821 and 1825 but unfortunately never shipped out of Rome. Upon the princess's untimely death, her family insisted that they be given possession of the statue, yet surprisingly agreed to accept a replica created by Thorvaldsen's most skilled apprentice, Danish sculptor H.W. Bissen. Today, this magnificent sculpture resides in the esteemed Pushkin Museum in Moscow, serving as a testament to Thorvaldsen's remarkable talent for capturing an individual lost in deep contemplation. The subject exudes an air of quiet introspection, seemingly oblivious to its surroundings while radiating dignity, poise, and profound understanding of the world.
