Xanten, the Dom of Xanten The memorial stone for Marcus Caelius from Bologna is the only archaeological evidence for the Varus Battle. It took place in 9 AD in the Teutoburg Forest. Three Roman legions were destroyed in the battle. After the devastating defeat, Rome abandoned its plans to occupy Germania beyond the Rhine River. The mortal remains of Marcus Caelius remained on the battlefield. His brother erected the monument in his stationing location Xanten.
