Laurent Delvaux was a Flemish sculptor born in Ghent in 1696, dying on February 24th, 1778, in Nivelles. His successful international career led him to London and Rome before returning to the Austrian Netherlands where he worked as a court sculptor. As a transitional figure between Baroque and Neo-classicism, Delvaux's work bridged two styles. He created twelve Roman emperor busts in Brussels' Warandepark, which have been displayed permanently since 1782. The busts are arranged around a fountain, each carved from white marble with armor made of jasper-colored marble. Despite weathering, the faces are almost unrecognizable, but it's believed one piece depicts Caligula.
