Marcus Aurelius ruled Rome from 161 until his death in 180 AD. He shared power with Lucius Verus initially, but took sole charge after Verus's demise in 169. Later, he was joined by his son Commodus in 177. The Roman Empire experienced its most tranquil period during the reign of Marcus Aurelius and the four preceding emperors known as the Five Good Emperors. A portrait of a young Marcus displays his austere demeanor even in youth. His written works, now famous as Meditations, are instrumental in shaping modern interpretations of Stoic philosophy. These writings have been acclaimed as one of the most influential philosophical texts ever penned.
