Marc Zakharovich Chagall was a Russian-French artist born on 6 July [O.S. 24 June] 1887 who made significant contributions to early modernism. As an innovative and versatile artist, he was associated with numerous major artistic styles and created works in almost every art format, including painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries, and fine art prints. Renowned art critic Robert Hughes hailed Chagall as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century," although Chagall viewed his work as "not the dream of one people but of all humanity." According to art historian Michael J. Lewis, Chagall was considered "the last survivor of the first generation of European modernists" and for many years, he was widely respected as the world's leading Jewish artist. Utilizing stained glass, Chagall produced stunning windows for notable cathedrals like Reims and Metz, as well as the UN and the Jerusalem Windows in Israel. His impressive repertoire also included large-scale paintings, including a part of the ceiling of the Paris Opéra.
