Marble Statue of Demeter at The British Museum, London
myminifactory
Demeter sits regally on a throne, her lower arms and hands vanished, one likely cradling a libation bowl or torch. Her head was carved separately from her body, showcasing the goddess as the embodiment of Greek womanhood: serene, mature, motherly, and modestly veiled beneath a shroud. Beside her stood a statue of her daughter Persephone, now lost to time. The sculpture was discovered in Demeter's sanctuary at Knidos.
