Marble 'Spider-Conch' Shells 2
myminifactory
These ancient Parian marble shells may resemble the examples shown here. One is mentioned in an inscription from 350-325 BC, which lists offerings to Asklepios, the healing god. The inscription was discovered at his sanctuary, located on the southern side of Athens' Acropolis. Actual marble specimens are scarce and challenging to date accurately. They could have served as containers for libations, perfumes, or even drinking cups. Both shells still have their removable stoppers intact. Faint purple and yellow hues can be seen on the left shell's surface.
