Marble 'Spider-Conch' Shells 1

Ancient artifacts suggest a Parian marble shell, resembling those shown here, was dedicated to Asklepios around 350-325 BC. The inscription detailing these offerings was unearthed at the god's sanctuary on Athens' southern acropolis slope. Although actual examples are scarce and hard to pinpoint in time, they might have served as libation vessels, perfume containers, or even drinking cups. Both shells retain their removable stoppers intact. Visible on the left shell are remnants of purple and yellow pigments.
