Marble Slab

This marble slab likely originated from northern China, as indicated by the attire worn by the figures and the tent that closely resembles a Mongol yurt. In addition, the discovery of an intact tomb lined with such slabs in Gansu's northwest province suggests that it probably came from within Jin dynasty territory. Established by a distinct ethnic group, this state differed from the predominant Han Chinese population. The complete set of slabs likely depicted popular Confucian tales known as the 'Twenty-four Exemplars of Filial Piety'. This was during a period when these tales were being organized and often inspired tomb decoration. The ruling groups who were not Han Chinese placed significant importance on upholding Confucian values in order to solidify their legitimacy as holders of the Mandate of Heaven. The slab is part of a larger set that illustrates the moral teachings of Confucius through the 'Twenty-four Examples of Filial Piety'. The figures are dressed in attire characteristic of the Jurchen people, who ruled over the Han Chinese in northern China.
