In the final years of the first century A.D. and early second century A.D., intricate hairstyles became popular among imperial court ladies. Hairpieces with added hair and concealed frameworks created high diadem-like structures around their faces. One such elaborate construction is seen in portraits of Marciana, Trajan's elder sister. These portraits hint at a Hadrianic period carving due to the high polish and engraved eyes. The powerful women of Trajan's family were highly respected by Hadrian, who claimed his throne partly because of their influence. Marciana was Sabina's grandmother, Hadrian's wife.
