A marble portrait bust of Emperor Gaius, famously known as Caligula, dates from Early Imperial Julio-Claudian era around A.D. 37 to 41. The Roman artwork stands at 20 inches high with a length of 7 1/16 inches and is made of marble. It's classified unassigned, acquired in 1914 through the Rogers Fund and carries accession number 14.37. This masterpiece is on display at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Gallery 162. The portrait style adopted from Augustus was continued by his successors to emphasize dynastic unity and continuity. Caligula's portrait bears regular features and meticulously designed hair like Augustus', but the artist also captured a hint of Caligula's vanity and cruelty through a proud head turn and thin, pursed lips. The piece was 3D scanned using 123D Catch on an iPhone 5S on January 26, 2014.
