A speedy glance at a marble head of Germanicus from the British Museum this afternoon, August 17th, revealed an unsatisfactory sun-kissed tan on his neck due to the harsh lighting in the room, which unfortunately marred the area. Marble head of Germanicus Roman, circa AD14-20 From Egypt Germanicus was the son of Antonia Minor and grandson of Livia. He was destined for greatness as the obvious heir to Tiberius but tragically died on campaign in AD 19. One of his children rose to power as emperor Caligula, who ruled from AD 37-41. In late antiquity, Christians vandalized the bust by breaking off its nose and carving a cross onto the forehead. GR 1872.0605.1 (Sculpture 1883)
