Marble Head of Emperor Tiberius at The British Museum, London

The figure of the future emperor Tiberius, set within a modern bust, showcases his youthful image despite being forty-six years old at the time of its creation in AD 4. The portrait was commissioned to commemorate his adoption as successor to Emperor Augustus, his stepfather. Livia, Tiberius' mother, likely played a significant role in his rise to power, combined with the unfortunate demise of all other potential heirs to Augustus. Tiberius excelled as a general in campaigns against Persia and along the Danube and Rhine, but struggled to replicate Augustus' rapport with the Senate, leading to a tumultuous period as emperor. His reliance on Sejanus, head of the Praetorian guard, sparked concern due to his ambition and brutality, as did Tiberius' alleged sexual excesses at the Villa Iovis on Capri.
