Marble head of an athlete

thingiverse

A Roman marble sculpture of a youthful athlete from the mid-Imperial, Antonine period (circa A.D. 138-192) is on display in Gallery 153 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Measuring 13.5 inches high, it is a replication of a Greek bronze statue from around 450-425 B.C., featuring the athlete wearing a fillet (band). He likely had one arm resting on his head, and the remnants of a rectangular support in his curls suggest this. Roman copies often catered to contemporary tastes, making this piece's polished flesh contrasting with deeply drilled hair particularly appealing for clients in the second century A.D. Acquired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1911 through the Rogers Fund, it bears accession number 11.210.2. A scan of this artwork was taken on January 26, 2014.
