Marble head of a Bearded Man at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Since eight other Roman copies of this Greek portrait type are well-documented, it's highly likely that the figure represented is a renowned or influential individual. Despite the lack of concrete evidence or identification, some scholars propose that the original statue depicted Solon, the Athenian lawgiver and one of the Seven Sages celebrated in ancient times for his practical wisdom. This head stands out as one of the most sensitive and life-like likenesses in the Metropolitan's collection of Roman copies of Greek portraits.
