The marble head originates directly from The Temple of Eshmun, an ancient sanctuary dedicated solely to Eshmun, the Phoenician god of healing, who is revered for his extraordinary powers. This remarkable artifact is situated near the Awali river in southwestern Lebanon. Apart from the elaborate decorative elements and intricately carved friezes that remain intact at their original location, many other artifacts were carefully extracted and relocated to the national museum, the Louvre, or are now securely stored by the Lebanese directorate general of antiquities. Several smaller finds, including a collection of inscribed ostraca unearthed by Dunand, offer rare examples of cursive Phoenician writing on the mainland of Phoenicia. The marble head of a child was discovered at the Eshmun Temple site, dating back to the 4th century BC.
