The messenger god Hermes was deeply connected with boundaries, and his protective image in the form of a bearded head set on a rectangular stone shaft was carefully placed at doorways and strategic points alongside the road. This stunning head conveys a sense of serene grandeur that characterized images of Zeus during the high classical period. The most celebrated of these was the colossal gold and ivory statue of Zeus at Olympia, crafted by Phidias. This object is part of "Scan The World".
