A marble tombstone with a family group, dating back to late Classical era (circa 360 B.C.), represents Greek Attic culture and is made of Pentelic marble. Standing at 171.1 cm high, it's classified as a stone sculpture. The artwork, access number 11.100.2, was acquired through Rogers Fund in 1911 and is currently displayed in Gallery 156. Due to missing framing niche, no inscriptions identify the deceased. The seated man and veiled woman gaze straight ahead, possibly mourning their dead family member or being the sole survivor of the group, while the young woman seems to be looking down at them. Despite ambiguity, this masterfully carved grave stele conveys a strong sense of family unity, making it one of the most magnificent examples from the classical period. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has more details on this piece.
