Marble anthropomorphic sarcophagus

This stunning Cypro-Classical anthropomorphic sarcophagus boasts an impressive body relief on its lid. The sarcophagus is one of only eleven known anthropomorphic sarcophagi discovered in Cyprus so far, comprising two monolithic parts: a coffin and its intricately carved lid featuring a female face with a stern expression in high relief. The downward-tapering lid cleverly implies the presence of a body, culminating in a vertical plinth that suggests the feet. Crafted from coarse-grained white Cycladic marble, this masterpiece is believed to be the work of a skilled local artisan who drew inspiration from the artistic traditions of Sidon and Damascus. Excavations have revealed the remains of several individuals buried within the sarcophagus, with the most recent attributed to the Roman period.
