Located at the base of Cerro de la Bufa, a prominent hill shaped like an Indian's face. After 273 years since the founding of Tenochtitlan and 106 years after the Americas were discovered, there existed on the eastern edge of what was once Nueva Vizcaya province, now in northern Durango state, a settlement inhabited by indigenous cocoyones, known as both Mapemes and "Mapimí", which translates to "Stone High" or simply "High Hill". From this name, linguists eventually adapted it to Mapemé and further evolved it into the present form: Mapimí.
