High School History Spain Map during the Time of the Catholic Monarchs Spain was divided into smaller regions known as provinces or reinos viejos with various capitals and governorships. In 1500, Ferdinand II of Aragon married Isabella I of Castile to unify their empires, thus bringing a sense of unity throughout this previously disjointed peninsula. This period is notable for significant milestones including Christopher Columbus' discovery of the Americas in 1492 as part of a quest for new trade routes and riches that can be used to increase royal power. The reign of these Catholic Monarchs was marked by their attempts at maintaining a strict Christian moral order through actions such as promoting and encouraging monastic life throughout the country while imposing severe penalties against Jews who were unable or unwilling to convert to Christianity despite living alongside them in the Spanish Kingdom of Aragon and in parts of Valencia during the period.
