Manual (Non-electronic) PonyTrope

I loved Keleyegan's original PonyTrope but I wanted a simpler (non-electronic) version. I did not want to buy a motor, Arduino, leds etc. And more importantly I had never programed an Arduino and was intimidated to learn. What to do? I decided to create a manual remix. This remix uses a non-motorized hub to spin the ponies. There is a pulley on the bottom but I have not yet designed the drive pulley for a hand crank (I just spin it with my finger for now). I repurposed a couple of old skateboard bearings my son had lying around for the shaft supports. The shaft is an 8Mx80mm hex bolt. (there is a parts list in the pdf file)

This uses the hub_short.stl from the original thing and only requires 3 additional parts and some hardware that should be available at any hardware or big box store.

For the strobe light I just use a strobe app on my phone. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easylabs.strobe&hl=en

This one works well. It seems to be an true strobe and the frequency is adjustable.

The manual PonyTrope works pretty well considering. Make sure the room is totally dark for best strobe effect.

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

LulzBot

Printer:

Mini

Rafts:

Doesn't Matter

Supports:

Yes

Notes:

Print the Hub Carrier and Hub Pulley with the recesses for the nut and bolt head down. Then use support for the recesses.

Post-Printing

I tapped the holes for the 6-32 bolts in the Hub Carrier. You may be able to let the bolts cut their own threads but tapping them makes assembly easier.

Category: Mechanical Toys
