The Mortar Hand, featuring iconic formative designs characteristic of Chavín culture, was unearthed on September 20 by Julio Cesar Tello at the Punkurí temple in the Nepeña Valley. It was found at the base of the Pukurí lion sculpture, in the center of the central staircase of the temple, as a seal of an earlier religious architectural structure. The mortar hand was discovered among objects offered during a woman's burial with red and violet face paint, a Strombus galeatus shell, hilltop snails, precious stone beads, semi-precious stone beads, two Spondylus princeps valves with holes, and another mortar. The hand features formative iconography through incisions (item L-22274). It was covered in earth, feathers, and leveled off before the next construction phase began.
