Manhattan, New York City's smallest borough by land area, is its most densely populated. Located on Manhattan Island at the Hudson River's mouth, it's coextensive with New York County. As an original U.S. state county, it was home to New York City's founding at Manhattan's southern tip. It's America's most densely populated county, with 69,464 residents per square mile in a 2010 census. Despite its size, Manhattan ranks third in population among NYC's five boroughs, after Brooklyn and Queens.
