Jef Lambeaux's travels to Italy left him deeply moved by the creations of Jean Boulogne, revealing an unmistakable fondness for the dramatic effects of force and motion. As he unveiled a life-size model of Temple of Human Passions at the 1889 Salon Triennial in Ghent, art critics unleashed their full fury upon him, creating quite a commotion that still resonates today. By 1890, the journal L'Art Moderne was loudly condemning Lambeaux's work, refusing to let it go unnoticed. Established in the late 18th century, the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent (MSKG) is Belgium's oldest and most revered art museum, born from a tumultuous period when Austrian and French regimes had forcibly closed down numerous churches and monasteries. This unprecedented measure resulted in the loss of a significant portion of the country's precious artistic heritage, leaving behind only a small collection of approximately 220 paintings and a few statues after countless works were seized and sold.
