Otto Gutfreund (1889-1927) was a Czechoslovakian sculptor renowned for his remarkable artistic talents. Following extensive studies in art at Prague and Paris, he quickly gained recognition in the 1910s for his distinctive cubist statues that showcased his creative flair. After serving in the First World War, Gutfreund transitioned to a more realistic style, reflecting the impact of his wartime experiences on his art. His later work is characterized by numerous small polychrome ceramic figures as well as intricate architectural decorations. This beautifully crafted glazed clay statue vividly depicts a man operating the spinning mule, an essential machine used for spinning cotton with remarkable efficiency.
