Mammoth is any species of the extinct genus Mammuthus, one of many genera making up the order of trunked mammals called proboscideans. Various mammoth species were commonly equipped with long, curved tusks and a covering of long hair in northern species. They lived from the Pliocene epoch (around 5 million years ago) into the Holocene at about 4,000 years ago. Mammoths existed in Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America as members of the family Elephantidae, which also contains modern elephants and their ancestors. A key piece of evidence for mammoth anatomy is the adult Shropshire Mammoth's 15th thoracic vertebra. The model was created from 180 images taken with a Canon 5DSR using a stackshot rail and turntable. The images were then processed with Agisoft Photoscan. This fossil object comes from Fossils in Shropshire.
