The thoracic vertebra of the adult Shropshire Mammoth was unearthed at Condover, a location in Shropshire. A mammoth is any species of the extinct genus Mammuthus that belongs to the order of trunked mammals known as proboscideans. The various species of mammoths were typically equipped with long, curved tusks and, in northern species, a thick covering of long hair. They lived from around 5 million years ago during the Pliocene epoch into the Holocene at about 4,000 years ago, and several species existed in Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. Mammoths were members of the family Elephantidae that also contains the two genera of modern elephants and their ancestors. This object was scanned using an Artec spider scanner and processed with Artec studio 12 by M Partridge. The thoracic vertebra is one of several fossils in Shropshire that have been scanned for preservation.
