The Navicular Bone from the Adult Shropshire Mammoth's Foot. The adult Shropshire mammoth, a species of extinct mammal, boasts a distinctive navicular bone in its foot. Mammuthus, the genus to which this creature belongs, comprises several species within the proboscidean order, characterized by long, curved tusks and thick coats of hair in northern populations. These majestic beasts roamed the earth from the Pliocene epoch, roughly 5 million years ago, to the Holocene period, approximately 4,000 years ago, with habitats spanning Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. The Shropshire mammoth's family tree is rooted in Elephantidae, a lineage that also encompasses modern elephants and their ancestors. To capture the intricate details of this ancient bone, a Canon 5DS R camera and Stackshot 3x with turntable were employed to generate 108 high-resolution images. These photographs were then meticulously processed using Agisoft Photoscan at advanced levels. This remarkable object is part of Fossils in Shropshire's vast collection, preserving a piece of history for future generations to marvel at.
