Mammoth Juvenille Jaw
myminifactory
Half of the lower jawbone of a juvenile Shropshire Mammoth is on display, showcasing a molar tooth that was actively used and an empty socket next to it. The socket previously held another tooth. The other half of the jaw will soon be available as a model for further study. Mammoths are extinct species belonging to the genus Mammuthus within the order of trunked mammals called proboscideans. These massive creatures were typically equipped with long, curved tusks and, in northern regions, thick coats of hair. Mammoths lived from the Pliocene epoch around 5 million years ago until the Holocene period about 4,000 years ago, existing across Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. They are part of the Elephantidae family, which also includes modern elephants and their ancestors. This remarkable image was captured using a Canon 5DS R camera with a Stackshot 3x lens and a turntable to generate 108 images. These images were then meticulously processed using Agisoft Photoscan at high levels for optimal results.
