A mammoth is any species of the extinct genus Mammuthus, part of the order of trunked mammals known as proboscideans. The various species of mammoth were often equipped with long, curved tusks and a thick coat of hair in northern species. They lived from around 5 million years ago during the Pliocene epoch to about 4,000 years ago in the Holocene era, existing in Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. As members of the family Elephantidae, they share ancestors with modern elephants and their two living genera.
