The woolly mammoth of later glacial periods has a well-documented ancestor in the steppe mammoth. This species, Mammuthus trogontherii or Mammuthus armeniacus, once roamed most of northern Eurasia during the Middle Pleistocene era, lasting from 600,000 to 370,000 years ago. Experts believe that it evolved in Siberia during the early Pleistocene from the Mammuthus meridionalis, marking the beginning of a long line of steppe and tundra elephants.
