Phan, the actual name of the subject known as the "Male of Madagascar," was mistakenly identified as an anonymous male when in fact she was a female. Born in 1803, Phan arrived in Edinburgh in 1827 with Dr William Sibbald and was showcased as a living specimen. The Phrenology Society conducted a thorough examination of her head, taking precise measurements and casting a mold that provided a remarkably accurate reading of her distinct characteristics.
