Makruk Thai Chess Set

thingiverse

We designed a unique chess set that reflects our base in Thailand and created custom Makruk pieces to match. Our Makruk-style chess board is available on Thingiverse at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3277942. To model the challenging knights/horses (ma in Thai), we downloaded Sculptris, a free 3D sculpting software, and used it instead of SketchUp. It's surprisingly easy to use once you grasp its potential. Thai chess (Makruk) has distinct rules but shares the same number of pieces as Western chess, making it possible to print these out and play either game with them. For more information on Makruk rules, visit Wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makruk. We settled for a rugged, ancient look in our pieces rather than attempting a super smooth finish. If you want to see Sculptris used to its full potential, check out user "nestra"'s chess set at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2821647.
