CNC machining can be a dirty process. For my Shapeoko 3, I chose the Makita router (RT0700cx4 here in the UK, RT0701 in the US) because it was significantly cheaper than the Dewalt. It comes with a trimmer base that, with some simple modifications, becomes an excellent dust shield. The trimmer base has a black plastic piece held on by 4 screws. This is typically the part that moves along the material being trimmed. I removed the screws and designed a version of this plate using 3D printing techniques, adding a lip around its circumference to hold a brush or flexible fabric. I happened to have some thick felt lying around, so I super-glued it to the inside rim of the lip. A couple of important points to note: 1. The Makita's power cord needs to be positioned on the left and pressed firmly against the front of the Shapeoko's Z-axis plate for optimal visibility through the clear plastic window. 2. To remove the trimmer base with dust shield, move the gantry to its maximum forward position so that the router overhangs the front of the machine. Once done, it is extremely easy to slide it on or off.
