Making Ratios Lesson - LilBot
thingiverse
Students will collaborate in a group-based environment to tackle a series of design challenges related to manufacturing objects. Each challenge will progressively build students' knowledge of proportions relative to scaling factors. Beginning with a preselected object, students will measure, sketch, and ultimately create their own versions, developing essential collaboration and communication skills. The first challenge is object selection and sketching, where students choose or are assigned an object to work on. They then spend the day refining their sketches to ensure accuracy. A gallery walk or group share-out follows, allowing groups to learn from one another and provide constructive feedback. Next, students face the scaling factor challenge, where they must determine an appropriate scale for their object to fit within the 3D printer's build area. This requires applying the scaling factor to each dimension and feature of the object. Students then redraw their object on graph paper, which can be a daunting task as they apply the scaling factor. Following this, students are introduced to CAD software, such as Tinkercad or OnShape, where they learn basic tools for creating objects. They then have time to explore the software and begin modeling their object. In the final challenge, students must re-scale their object so a given number can be printed at one time in the build volume. This requires careful consideration of scale and cost-effectiveness. Upon completion of this challenge, students will likely demonstrate increased knowledge and skills in: * Using appropriate methods of measurement (SMP 5) * Modeling objects with drawings * Application of scale (7.G.1) * Exposure to Computer Aided Design applications and 3D modeling * Creating a printable part for 3D printing * Working as a creative team to accomplish challenge goals * Analyzing and critiquing the work of others throughout the design process (SMP 3)
