Last Updated 2015-12-15 The ornament is a one-piece print with 18 hinges and a screw mechanism that controls its opening. Several cool techniques are incorporated into this model, which I'd like to explain in detail. Using the egg is quite straightforward: Print it as one piece, grab a coin, and gently open the egg. The first time you open the egg, 18 SmartBridges will break (producing a pretty cool sound). Then, turn the coin clockwise to open it. The first time it may be a bit rough, but don't worry; it won't break. After having been opened and closed once, it will open and close easily. Print Instructions: This model is printed on a Replicator 2 with standard settings: Layer Height of 0.2mm, no raft or support material needed. SmartBridge: I came up with this technique myself, so I named it "SmartBridge." The concept is simple: to create a horizontal one-piece hinge, I added a small bridge about 0.4mm beneath the hinge. When the hinge moves, the supporting bridge breaks, freeing the hinge to move. See images for more details on how it works. StencilWall: A stencil wall is a simple way to add color to your print. It's a tight layer around your model with some shape in it, allowing you to easily spray paint it. I also added a seam to the wall for easy removal. Unfinished Time-Lapse I'd like to thank: Makezine: For organizing this contest. Ultimaker: For providing support. 3DHubs: For connecting designers and 3D printers. JATMN, Sybren_Zwetsloo, and 3Dvangelist: For test-printing my design and giving me the feedback I needed to make it workable on various printers. 3Dvangelist tested the print on a Da Vinci PRO with Layer Height of 0.2mm, no raft or support material. JATMN tested it on a Wanhao Duplicator 4 using Simplify3D with Layer Height of 0.2mm and 20% infill, no raft or support material. Sybren_Zwetsloo tested the print on an Ultimaker 2 with Layer Height of 0.2mm and 20% infill, no raft or support material. Pro Tip: Since this design is egg-shaped, you can also use it as a decoration for next Easter (saving you time and material).
