Makey dancing robot of the Maker Faire
myminifactory
The very first interactive version of Makey the robot is finally here! This awesome bot, also known as the #MakerFaire robot, can walk and dance with ease, all thanks to its clever use of the same mechanic principle that powers the popular #OttoDIY. I've been working on 3D modeling "Makey" since March, and after several revisions and one not-so-beautiful prototype, I'm thrilled with how it's turned out. The most challenging part of this project was taking a 2D logo and a small 3D printable figurine and turning them into a fully functional robot. Check out the video of Makey in action on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-yqCCMkycQ Inspired by my experience with interactive robots, I wanted to see if it was possible to "Ottomize" any robot using the same mechanical principle. For this first experiment, I chose the iconic "Makey" robot from the Maker Faires. I picked Makey because of its striking resemblance to the structure used in Otto, despite some differences in articulation. I thought it would be a fun challenge to bring Makey to life and make it move in a way that was both recognizable and functional. After conducting extensive research online, I couldn't find anyone who had attempted this project on a small scale before. While there were some impressive large-scale Makey robots out there, no one had created an automatic walking biped robot like mine. To ensure my design was as accurate as possible, I referenced the 3D-Printable Maker Faire Robot figurine, the 2D logo, and other online resources. Maker Faire is truly the greatest show and tell on earth! This project is a heartfelt tribute to Make Media, now known as Make Community. By making this robot replicable and shareable, I hope to encourage people to host their own Maker Faire events in cities around the world.
