MakerGear Z-knob with Crank and Stop
thingiverse
Tim Edwards' clever attachment for the MakerGear Z-knob proves extremely handy and practical. It sits neatly on top, serving two purposes - as a convenient handle to adjust the Z-axis and a safety feature that ejects automatically if left unremoved during a print session. While slightly bulkier due to its position over the factory knob, it's an essential accessory for those who value efficiency. Combining Tim's design with MakerGear's low-profile Z-knob has resulted in a streamlined one-piece solution that not only looks sleeker but also features fewer components while retaining all its advantages. This smart upgrade is more compact than the original and retains the innovative functionality that made it appealing to begin with. A notable aspect of this attachment lies within the factory knob, where a metal insert was precision-fitted using press technology. However, when crafting a new and improved version, Edwards ingeniously dissected his factory knob by carefully cutting small slits on both sides before prying it open with a screwdriver. The original metal piece proved useful in the revamped design. A resourceful tool set item - a socket - was utilised to carefully assemble the re-engineered component within a vise without damaging the integral ramp and post structure. To further enhance user experience, a subtle chamfer was added to the top of this post ensuring a smoother operation of Edwards' Z-axis adjusting lever. The final result is truly functional. Built using Tim's patented crank handle available here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:934680 For maximum effectiveness, consider printing this crank in colours other than black, lest you find yourself perpetually searching for the misplaced handle, as I sometimes do with mine.
