Makerbot Y-Axis Motor Holder
thingiverse
After about 3 years of use, the y-axis motor holder in my Makerbot 2X snapped abruptly into several pieces. Its abrupt failure severely impacted the control my printer had over its movement along the y-axis. Unfortunately, this resulted in a drastic decline in the quality of my prints, making them essentially unusable. I was genuinely disappointed by this turn of events. I quickly created a replacement piece using OpenSCAD and took it to school to print it out. Note: Printing it in ABS plastic is absolutely essential; I had initially printed the old part in PLA but that lasted for less than an hour, with one side starting to melt as it made contact with the motor. This unexpected development left me perplexed - my research indicates that most motors rarely reach 130*C. Despite this unusual anomaly, the warping of the part due to its own weight and subsequent impact on print quality forced me to swap it out for a stronger ABS printed component.
