Makerbot Spool Adapter for Another Filament Spool Holder
thingiverse
I'm a big fan of TheKre8Groups' Another Filament Spool Holder's straightforward yet effective design. One thing that bothered me, though, was when I used Makerbot ABS on it - the spool would wobble all over the thin spindle. What I really wanted was for the spool to roll smoothly and as little as possible. So I took the original spindle, cut it apart, and added an insert so the two parts could be joined together seamlessly. I also threw in two guide rings to keep the spool perfectly centered. The spool insert itself is designed to fit most Makerbot ABS filament spools with ease. To prevent the spool from working its way off the insert, I added an end plate - but my experience so far suggests that it's probably not even needed. If you decide to remix this for spools made by other manufacturers, though, the end plate might just come in handy. The result is a spool that rolls with much more ease and stability. It also raises the height of the spool, giving you some extra clearance underneath. What I really love about this design is how easily it can be adapted to fit any manufacturer's spool - all you need to do is adjust the dimensions of the insert.
