Version 003: Now with an option to make it really heavy

I have been using this stand for a while now, and two things have bothered me:

I wanted points as feet so it would always stand well even on not-so-flat surfaces

I wanted it to be a lot heavier. The wide feet don't make it prone to falling over, but it gets pushed around easily, and the headphones are significantly heavier than the stand itself, which is never a good thing really.

Recently printed an LED lamp and their design used 6 mm steel balls in the pedestal to make it heavy at the bottom, and that gave me an a-ha! moment. 6mm steel balls are basically AirSoft ammunition, and you can buy them in bulk for pretty cheap.

So now Version 003 has two parts: Main part and cover. Print both parts, fill the hollow section with steel balls, and glue in the cover. It's 10 degrees conical and should fit snugly, but I made it with a 0.1 mm offset so it sits a bit lower than flush, which is completely intentional and will not be visible in daily use.

Leaving the old version up for those who want it - they look exactly the same.

This is a remix of the popular MakerBot headphone stand. I did not like a couple of things about this design - I wanted a curved surface for the headphones to sit on, and while the original design is very elegant, some of the surfaces don't come out very pretty because they have a very slight angle relative to the bed and the layering becomes very apparent, especially when printing at 0.3 mm.

So, this is my version. I made it from scratch in SolidWorks because fiddling with the existing design would have been more work. I included a STEP file if you want to play some more. I would have loved to make it a bit taller but the limit in this case is the size of the print bed.

The shown print is in Prusa PLA Galaxy Black. The most elegant material to print stuff that mostly needs to look good.
Category: Audio
