I captured photos for this scan of Major, an iconic bronze sculpture in Downtown Durham created by Leah Foushee and Mike Waller, on June 8th during the George Floyd protests. This sculpture is likely considered the unofficial city mascot in many Durham residents' minds, and seeing it adorned with chalk expressions struck me as a powerful image that embodied the national moment through a uniquely Durham perspective. A few days later, rain washed away most of these vibrant markings. This scan consisted of approximately 2000 images taken with both a Canon 60D and an iPhone 11. I processed the images in Agrisoft Metashape and generated UVs and maps using Zbrush. The chalk served as a functional equivalent to registration points, enabling the photogrammetry algorithms to work more effectively. As a result, the mesh geometry turned out cleaner than my previous scan of Major.
